New Faculty

Welcome to the Payroll Department’s site for new faculty members at the University of Pittsburgh! Here you will find some basic information about your pay and other related services.

For any payroll related questions or issues, you will need to reach out to your supervisor or department administrator first as all payroll actions are submitted and approved by your department. If your department is not able to answer your questions, please submit an inquiry. We will be happy to assist you!

Your Pay

Faculty at Pitt are paid monthly via direct deposit on the last working day of the month. View the schedules & deadlines to find annual pay schedules and holiday schedules.

Faculty members paid on 8, 9, and 10 month contracts may elect to receive their pay over 12 months. However, the IRS has the following restrictions on this election:

  • The election must be made before the start of the academic year.
  • Your total annual salary must not exceed a threshold amount established by the IRS each year.

You may also download our faculty pay worksheet (XLSX) for assistance with calculating salary and deferred pay amounts based on appointment length, appointment details, contract dates, and annual salary.

Please see the faculty information on our my pay page for more information on salary and deferrals.

Employee-Self Service

The University of Pittsburgh offers employee self-service through Pitt Worx for securely viewing your payslips and making changes to your address, direct deposit, and IRS Form W-4.

After your first day of work, we recommend that you log into employee self-service through Pitt Worx to verify the information you provided during the hiring process.

Part-time and temporary faculty members from outside of PA are encouraged to verify that they have provided the address of their permanent residence at the time of hire. This may be your address in another state if you do not plan to become permanently domiciled in PA.  The address that you provide impacts your local tax withholding.  For example, Pittsburgh has a 1% non-resident withholding tax for employees working here temporarily, while maintaining permanent residences in other states. If you provided an address for a temporary apartment in the city, this will be considered your permanent address and 3% Pittsburgh residence tax will be withheld.  For more information on how to determine your permanent address, see PA Department of Revenue website. To make changes to the address you provided at the time you were hired, use the Change Address option of employee self-service through Pitt Worx.

Pay & Taxes

Questions about your pay and deductions can be answered by reviewing the my pay page. Your tax questions can be answered by reviewing the US tax information page.

Nonresidents of the United States working at the University on visas have a different set of tax requirements. Information specific to nonresident employees is explained on the global payroll page.

Once you review which taxes apply to your pay, you can estimate your net pay with the net pay calculator.

Signing Up for Benefits

Your benefit deductions are administered by the Benefits Department in Human Resources. You can also view the Benefits Department’s faculty post-orientation guide.

Employment Verification

All employment verifications are processed through the Human Resources department. Information on how you can authorize access to your secure pay information for employment verification purposes is provided in the employment verification section of the Human Resources website.
